12 Superb Irish Silver Fiddle Pattern Table Forks, Dublin 1800

These superb Irish fiddle pattern table forks are in the traditional style, with the terminal turned up and with the softer shoulders. Engraved to the back of the terminal with a durcal crest. (see pictures)

Hallmarked for Dublin 1800 or 1801, makers mark on 8 is JP for John Power (8) & SN for Samuel Neville.

These forks are in superb condition, with no repairs of erasures. They have a wonderful lustre and patina, and are beautifully proportioned. Excellent examples of early nineteenth century fiddle pattern tableware.

The Fiddle pattern derives its name from its fiddle-shaped handle, the Fiddle pattern must rate as one of the major designs for flatware.

The pattern reached its height in popularity in the early part of the nineteenth century, but after the change to the heavier classicism of the Regency, the fashion changed to the lighter Old English pattern.

It is interesting to note that most nineteenth century flatware patterns developed either directly or indirectly from the fiddle pattern.
