An Exhibition or Museum Quality George II Silver Basket London 1745 by Edward Aldridge

An exceptional large cast silver basket of pierced oval form with an arched swing handle with two outstanding caryatids arising from a leaf capped C-scroll support. The cast and applied rim of shaped foliate decoration. At each end is a cameo of a female face with a floral garland. The central bowl of the basket engraved with a vacant rocaille cartouche. The top of the handle is decorated with a leaf form cartouche within which is the crest of a Phoenix arising from a crown. The sides of the basket with hand cut pierced decoration. The whole standing on four cast and applied leaf capped spiral form pad feet.
Clearly hallmarked to the underside for London 1745 by Edward Aldridge.
This is an important and impressive piece of early Georgian silver in first class condition with no damage or repairs. The workmanship is of the highest quality and the weight and size are unusual. This is of exhibition or museum quality. Examples of Edward Aldridge’s work are to be found in the V and A museum. Wonderful colour and patina.
