A George II Irish Silver Coffee Pot, Dublin circa 1734
An exceptional quality Irish George II silver coffee pot. Of tapering baluster form with high embossed and chased decoration of lion and eagle with floral and scroll patterns above. Cast leaf-capped spout, a high raised floral decorated band to the domed lid with ornate cast 'artichoke' finial. Original scroll fruit wood handle. Cartouches to both sides one with a family coat of arms and a crest to the other. (see pictures) The whole standing on a stepped circular foot.
Hallmarked for Dublin 1734 - 46, no makers marks, however I have found similar examples by George Wicks. Hibernia and crowned harp to the body and lid.
A scratch weight of 26-2-0 is marked to the base. The marks to the body are clear and well struck with only some partial rubbing, the marks to the lid are very crisp allowing the date to be narrowed down.
This is a very attractive coffee pot in excellent condition.
The gauge of the silver is very good.
This is an exceptionally rare Irish coffee pot with beautiful decoration representative of the highly skilled embossers/chasers of Dublin during the 1st half of the 18th century.
